WHC Technical Topic: Weighty Words: Root Cause

By Dr. David R. Roisum

In this short video clip, we talk about what might be the single, most used and abused word in troubleshooting, which is root cause.

One abuse is to think that finding THE "cause" is necessary for finding a remedy or a cure.  Another abuse is to think that there is a single cause, when in most cases there are a half-dozen strong factors for even a single mechanism. Finally, it is common to see simple "triggers" as a cause when they merely modify frequency and/or severity and can not, in themselves, cause that problem.
