IEEE Industry Applications Magazine, Volume 19, No. 6, had a spotlight on motors and drives. One interesting article on page 18 was “Best of Motor Primer” by Gary Donner.

This discusses several causes of motor failure and solutions or preventative measures. They include:

Lightning arrestors
Bearing types including sleeve, deep-groove, sealed, shielded, open, angular-contact, and cylindrical
Torsional Resonance
Lubrication and greasing
